  • 4Kinomiya Shrine

Kinomiya Shrine is a rarity in Japan as it is well known for its power to protect from the bad effects of alcohol consumption. A 2000-year old camphor tree with a base circumference of roughly 24 meters grows here and is said to be the second thickest tree in Japan. Many people worship this tree as a god and say it grants wishes to those who circle its base twice without speaking the wish aloud. At night the tree is lighted, giving it a mysterious, spiritual vibe.

Edo Shogunate generals including Ieyasu Tokugawa loved the hot water of Atami a great deal and even ordered it delivered to Edo Castle in what is modern day Tokyo. This historical fact is now dramatized every year during the Autumn Festival in Atami City.

  • 8OYU
    KANKETSUSEN
    Hot Spring

Oyu is the primary source of hot spring water in the Atami Hot Spring area. It was once known as one of the three largest geysers in the world that produced a rocket-like pillar of 90 degree water and steam until the Great Kanto Earthquake altered its flow and weakened its power. The geyser's eruptions are now made artificially by means of a mechanical system. For ages, the hot spring of Oyu has attracted visitors for its many healing properties including the healing of wounds and recovery of physical energy. Located nearby is "Nikko Tei Hot Spring", a renowned quality hot spring, where visitors can go to bathe.
